Flat roofing, also referred to as Torch on roofing, is a popular option for flat and low slope roofs because of its water and fire resistance and energy efficiency.

An open-flame torch is used to install modified bitumen sheets. Torch on roofing is a highly technical process. At Roof Doctor we have a team of skilled experts with extensive experience installing torch on roofing. We provide full roofing services including installation, maintenance and repair services as well as new construction. We also supply reliable products for roofing projects to residential, commercial, and industrial customers in Kelowna.

Our team at Roof Doctor roll out sheets of modified bitumen and heat the sheets with a hand-held propane torch. Heating melts the sheet's layers and gets welded, resulting in the permanent bond between coatings and getting pasted onto the roof surface. The heating is also applied on seams to melt them to get fused entirely in such a way as to make them seamless carpets.

Roof installation takes significantly less time, but it is risky due to the technical aspects of using a propane torch to heat the roofing material. Only a professional with full training and experience should handle the job. Roof Doctor has installation experts with complete knowledge of products and technology.

Flat roofing is a popular lightweight roofing option for flat roofs or gently sloped roofs for residential, commercial and industrial buildings because it offers a lots of benefits such as -

  • Adaptability: It can be applied to the existing structure without many modifications.
  • Fire and water resistance: Torch on roofing material is made of two plies of modified bitumen membranes which have fire and water resistance.
  • Less odour: No harmful fumes emanate during installation.
  • Energy efficient: Modified bitumen is highly resistant to ultraviolet light and the reflectivity of light makes it energy efficient.
  • Durability: It can last more than 20 years without any damage from weather conditions.
  • Cost effective: Maintenance costs are very low and frequent repairs are not required.

Two-layer systems and three-layer systems are the two main styles of Flat roofing. Both systems have a base sheet and a smooth cap sheet, but in the three-layer system, the third layer is used to finish with a granule cap sheet. This layer makes the material more versatile with fire resistance, water barrier, energy efficiency, and colour-rich range.

Besides these layers, torch on flat roofing systems include -

  • Insulation: In cold climate areas, a flat or low-slope roof needs insulation to retain heat in the building.
  • Vapour barrier: This layer helps prevent the roof from developing condensation or moisture issues.
  • Overlay board: This overlay board supports the torch on the roofing membrane.
  • Base sheet: This first layer of modified bitumen membrane is adhered to the overlay board by direct heat fusing with a propane torch or adhesive.
  • Cap sheet: This top membrane is a smooth cap sheet heated with a propane torch from the bottom to the top of the base sheet. These two layers are pressed together to fuse them to look like a carpet. The third layer with granules is also applied similarly in a three-layer torch system.
