Two distinct styles emerge within flat roofing: the two-layer and three-layer systems. Both systems share a base sheet and a cap sheet. However, in the case of the three-layer system, an additional layer is introduced, which involves the application of a granule cap sheet.
This supplementary layer enhances the material's versatility, encompassing attributes such as heightened fire resistance, fortified water barrier capabilities, improved energy efficiency, and an expanded spectrum of vibrant colours.
In addition to these layers, torch on flat roofing systems include:
Insulation. In cold climate areas, a flat or low-slope roof needs insulation to retain heat in the building.
Overlay board. This overlay board supports the torch on the roofing membrane.
Base sheet. This first layer of modified bitumen membrane is adhered to the overlay board by direct heat fusing with a propane torch or adhesive.

Cap sheet. This top membrane is a smooth cap sheet heated with a propane torch from the bottom to the top of the base sheet. These two layers are pressed together to fuse them to look like a carpet. The third layer with granules is also applied similarly in a three-layer torch system.
